A smiling kendoka is a rare thing indeed. I haven’t seen too many smile while suited up in bogu. The ones that do smile are extremely talented, fast and land several precise cuts before you can flinch.

With the slight tilt of the head and a look that pierces the darkness, it makes for one confident kendoka, if not, then definitely an imposing one.

It is never a good point in a jigeiko if this becomes your point of view. If it were a jigeiko, a shinai would be used in place of the bokuto.

While I was adjusting camera settings, I noticed Pierre’s natural pose. Just as he was about to move into position, I asked him to hold for a photo. Taking portraits is totally different from that of landscape or of a macro. I’ve found it to be a collaborative project between the photographer and the model.
