Two Surfers

With the swell, it was no surprise that I found myself sharing the sunset with surfers. It was a mix of timing to get shots I wanted without these guys in frame and then to also get them in frame. I spoke with a few of them as they went in and came out. It was great to be able to share an unspoken love of the ocean.

Filling the Pool

The swell picked up during sunset and it wasn’t long that this tidal pool was being filled by the breaking waves. This was also the point at which I realised that I could not investigate the pool as well as take photos. The two activities conflicted at this point, though probably due to the large waves that were rolling in. My camera doesn’t swim!

Tide’s Coming In

The tide was on its way in though miraculously I managed to keep relatively dry during this shoot.

Sunset Splash

With the return of warmer weather, I’ve been wanting to head out to chase sunsets. I’ve missed several intense ones in this week due to work commitments. I headed up to North Beach for a test shoot and although the colours of the sunset are dull, the breaking waves became the focal point.

Spiky Sunset

This was taken during one of my inital outings to Woodman Point to chase a sunset back in December 2008. It was also the beginning of the realisation that a warm red sunset doesn’t happen every single day. I learnt to take photos of other things when this occurred which has been many countless times. Though, my success rate of witnessing a sunset where colours are thrown up against the clouds has increased.

Wired for Sunset

This is one of the first photos I took into my foray into photography. It was taken in September 2008, just weeks after I had purchased my Nikon D60. I had driven to South Beach in fremantle in the hope of a good sunset opportunity. It was not to be so I started to experiment with ideas gained from various sources. This was one of my better initial attempts at photography.

Four months later, I upgraded to a Nikon D90.

Point Peron – Pensive

After a product shoot for a client, I headed to the coast to have a look around Point Peron. I was in the area and noticed storm clouds on the horizon.

I only had a quick scout of the area and found plenty of spots to take photos from in the future. I definitely will be going back, though in much clamer conditions. The wind was bitingly cold today and I had to shelter from some of the showers that went by.

I’d been told about lines, rules of thirds, focal lengths, composition and so much more in the week leading up to this. My head was exploding with so much theory that I just about forgot the enjoyment and thrill of taking a photo.

I think I applied the theory correctly here.
